Method
Preparation
- Start by cutting the tops and bottoms off the sweet onions, then slice them into quarters without cutting all the way through, leaving them intact at the bottom.
- Soak the onions in buttermilk for at least 10 minutes to enhance tenderness and flavor.
Coating
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Remove one onion from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dip it into the seasoned flour mixture, coating every exposed part. Repeat with the second onion.
Cooking
- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
- Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place both coated onions in the basket, ensuring they’re not crowded. Spray the tops lightly with additional cooking oil.
- Air fry the onions for 12-15 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
- Check for doneness; if needed, air fry for an extra couple of minutes.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the air fryer to restore crispiness. Avoid freezing to maintain texture.
