Ingredients

For the Onions
  • 2 medium Sweet Onions (like Vidalia)
  • 1 cup Buttermilk (or milk with lemon juice) Helps tenderize the onions
  • as needed spray Cooking Spray/Oil For crispy exterior
For the Coating
  • 1 cup Flour Substitute with gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option
  • 1 tbsp Paprika Consider using smoked paprika for extra flavor
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder
  • 0.5 tsp Cayenne Pepper Adjust according to taste
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper

Method

Preparation
  1. Start by cutting the tops and bottoms off the sweet onions, then slice them into quarters without cutting all the way through, leaving them intact at the bottom.
  2. Soak the onions in buttermilk for at least 10 minutes to enhance tenderness and flavor.
Coating
  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  2. Remove one onion from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dip it into the seasoned flour mixture, coating every exposed part. Repeat with the second onion.
Cooking
  1. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place both coated onions in the basket, ensuring they’re not crowded. Spray the tops lightly with additional cooking oil.
  3. Air fry the onions for 12-15 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Check for doneness; if needed, air fry for an extra couple of minutes.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the air fryer to restore crispiness. Avoid freezing to maintain texture.
