  • 1/3 cup honey or maple syrup Both options work; choose based on preferred flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Enhances the flavor profile.
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour Provides structure and a subtle flavor.
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder Gives the brownies their chocolatey flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda Helps the brownies rise.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt Enhances overall flavor.
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips Optional, for an extra chocolatey touch.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the ripe bananas until mostly smooth, leaving a few small lumps.
  3. Stir in the applesauce, honey (or maple syrup), and vanilla until the mixture is glossy.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring just until no dry flour is visible.
  6. Fold in the dark chocolate chips, if using, and scrape the batter into the prepared pan.
Baking
  1. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Cooling
  1. Let the brownies cool in the pan before cutting into squares.

Notes

Use very ripe bananas for better sweetness; whisk the cocoa thoroughly to prevent clumps. Store brownies tightly covered at room temperature or in the fridge for longer keeping.
